Outdoor Setup

Don’t get caught in the rain

Setting up outdoors presents a unique set of circumstances that need special attention to, especially if it rains.

Water and electricity are not friends and when they get together, they ruin parties. Your equipment may seem to be well protected from the rain underneath a canopy tent, until the wind picks up and the rain turns from droplet form into a fine mist. Which is enough water to fry a laptop, blow fuses in your amp, short your lights or blow a speaker! Hopefully you were smart enough to plug into a GCFI switch, and bring the essential rain gear.

Have a special Rain Gear gig bag prepared ahead of time and stock it with a few heavy duty plastic bags large enough to fit over your speakers. A roll of saran wrap and plenty of masking tape will help waterproof each cord and power cable. A 6 foot yoga mat should fit snug into the gig bag, and will provide a nice slip proof surface that also does not conduct electricity. The last thing you would want is to be playing with lots of power while standing in a puddle of water.

This and many more quick tips are offered to you free, for just signing up to our newsletter.

Song List

The #1 question clients will ask is “What is your music selection?”

What is your music selection?

They want to be confident in knowing that you have a wide enough selection to satisfy the demands of the crowd, and to be as familiar with as many genres as there are diversities within the crowd.
From the Golden Oldies, to modern day Hip-Hop, your song list will make or break your event.  More than making sure you have the list of top songs from every category, you must familiarize yourself with song combinations knowing what to play and when to play it. There are some songs that sound great when played sequentially, while others sound horrible when played back to back. It is up to the trained and experienced DJ to know which songs to play and in what order. And it is up to us to get you the experience and training you need to be successful.

The power of a song!

A song has the power to move people, to get them out of their seat and onto the dance floor. The right song has the power to create energy and excitement within people, enough so, as to revive the youthful child in each of us. And a combination of perfect songs has the ability to transform an ordinary night into an extraordinary and unforgettable event.

A song also has the ability to clear the dance floor in the first few beats. A couple of bad songs in a row has the ability to sour even the most optimistic of hosts. But playing 3 horribly inappropriate songs together and you can crush all life out of a party and threaten to burden your business with a bad reputation.

Take our advice…

Now you can understand the grave importance that a song possesses. By choosing a single song, you have the power to determine the life or death of a party. You can also become aware of the fact that the power of the right or wrong song can make or break your reputation. I want you to know that we have been there, and have done that. Voice Training

So, you have the equipment and the songs you will need to get started as a Disc Jockey.  Now it is time to start training your voice for the Emcee part of the deal.

Yep, you will need to train your voice to sound crisp and clear over an amplified speaker system.  Make sure you can broadcast your voice loud enough and clear enough so that people in the back of the room can hear you clearly.  It really helps to have a good microphone and to practice with it, so you can figure out how far away from your mouth you need to speak to be heard, adjust your volume accordingly.  Also, the speed of your voice matters in different situations.  You can speak slow and softly to be meaningful and sincere, or a little louder and quicker to show excitement and energy.

Not only do you need to know what to say and how to say it, you also need to know when to say it.  You don’t want to make too many announcements or too little.  Speaking with your clients about their expectations will help you determine how much Emceeing is needed.  And by all means, practice what you will be saying in your head before you say it.  Having a clear idea of what you want to say before you say it, will save you from lots of stuttering and embarrassment.
